High energy: Fish meal contains a high amount of fat, with imported fish meal containing about 10% fat; The standard for domestic fish meal is 10% -14%, but some can reach as high as 15% -20%. Therefore, the metabolic energy in fish meal for chickens is usually between 11.7-12.55 megajoules per kilogram. But its fat is prone to oxidation, often resulting in a deficiency of vitamin A and vitamin E with the oxidation of oil, and at the same time, the oxidation of fat heats up, which is one of the reasons for the spontaneous combustion of fish meal.
High calcium and phosphorus content: Fish meal contains 3.8% -7% calcium and 2.76% -3.5% phosphorus, with a calcium to phosphorus ratio of 1.4-2:1. The better the quality of fish meal, the higher the phosphorus content, and the utilization rate of phosphorus is 100%. But during storage, due to chemical decomposition, phosphorus is released and becomes elemental phosphorus. Elemental phosphorus has a low ignition point and can naturally ignite without the need for an open flame, which is the second reason why fish meal is prone to spontaneous combustion during storage.
High content of trace elements: Fish meal contains six commonly used trace elements in chickens, especially zinc and selenium, which have the highest content. According to analysis, each kilogram of sea fish meal contains 97.5-151 milligrams of zinc, while tuna meal contains as much as 213 milligrams, and freshwater fish meal contains 60 milligrams
Each kilogram of sea fish meal contains 1.5-2.2 milligrams of selenium, while tuna meal can reach up to 4-6 milligrams. Rich in B vitamins, especially choline and vitamin B2. High digestibility: Chickens have digestibility rates of 91% -93% and 78% -91% for fish meal protein and fat, respectively. High salt content: Imported fish meal has a salt content of around 1.5% -2.5%, while the national standard for domestically produced fish meal is 4% for grade fish meal and 5% for grade three fish meal. However, in reality, fish meal without adulteration exceeds the standard, with some as high as 15% -20%; In recent years, most of the fake fishmeal used for miscellaneous purposes has a low salt content, with some fake fishmeal containing less than 1%. Due to the high salt content of fish meal, it is easy to absorb moisture, which is conducive to the reproduction of bacteria, mold, and yeast, causing temperature rise, often clumping and even natural, which is another reason why fish meal is prone to spontaneous combustion during storage.

Classification method of fish meal
There are mainly three types:
(1) According to the source, fish meal is divided into two types: domestically produced fish meal is generally referred to as domestic fish meal, and imported fish meal is collectively referred to as imported fish meal. Obviously, this classification method is relatively rough and cannot reflect the quality of fish meal.
(2) According to the nature and color of the raw materials, fish meal can be classified into 6 types: ordinary fish meal (orange white or brown); White fish powder (gray white or yellow gray white, mainly cod); Brown fish meal (orange brown or brown); Mixed fish meal (light black brown or thick black): Whale meal (light black) and fish meal (fish processing residue), etc.
